The importance of movement

Why We Value Yoga At Clare House Nursery, we believe that yoga is much more than a physical activity—it is a powerful way of nurturing the whole child. Our ethos is centred on supporting every child’s physical, emotional and cognitive development, helping them to grow into confident, resilient and independent learners. Through yoga, children are given the opportunity to strengthen their bodies, calm their minds, develop self-awareness and build the foundations they need to thrive both in nursery and beyond. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) 2026 recognises Physical Development as one of the three Prime Areas of Learning because it underpins children’s ability to learn across all areas of the curriculum. Yoga supports this by developing core strength, balance, coordination, posture and body awareness—skills that are essential for sitting comfortably, concentrating, developing pencil control and becoming ready for early writing. It also nurtures children’s communication, emotional regulation and personal development by encouraging mindfulness, resilience and confidence. The Birth to Five Matters (2026) guidance highlights that children learn best through active, meaningful experiences that promote physical wellbeing, emotional security and positive relationships. Yoga reflects these principles by providing children with opportunities to move with purpose, regulate their emotions through breathing and mindfulness, and develop the confidence to explore their own capabilities in a calm, supportive environment. At Clare House Nursery, yoga is woven into our daily practice because we recognise that healthy bodies and healthy minds develop together. By strengthening children’s physical foundations while promoting emotional wellbeing and self-regulation, we are preparing them not only for the demands of school, but for a lifetime of healthy habits and positive mental wellbeing. Every stretch, balance and mindful breath helps children become stronger, calmer and more confident learners, reflecting our commitment to giving every child the very best start in life.
